Alternative Spring Break 2013 - Border and Immigration Issues

Picture
Nine Miami students and three advisers traveled to southeast Arizona March 10-17 for an interfaith Alternative Spring Break trip to study border and immigration issues. You can read more about it on the trip blog created by students and advisers.

The trip was organized by the Campus Ministry Center, Hillel at Miami, and Lights on Campus. Trip goals of the trip included:
  • Learning more about immigration and border issues from those directly involved with humanitarian aid, activism, and immigrant communities
  • Experiencing border culture and the Sonoran desert
  • Serving those who are suffering or in need
  • Looking at border issues from a spiritual, religious, or ethical perspective rather than through the lens of politics or economics
  • Putting what we learn into action locally

Trip sponsors included Miami University Parents Fund; the Ford Family Initiative for Spirituality, Meaning and Purpose; the Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute; Associated Student Government; Lights on Campus interfaith student organization; Beth Israel Congregation in Hamilton; Hopedale Unitarian Universalist Community in Oxford;  Adath Israel Congregation in Cincinnati; and Oxford Citizens for Peace and Justice.

For information about the trip, contact Rebecca Woods, CMC executive director or Marcy Miller, executive director of Hillel.
